Accomplished musicians with revered careers each, Johanna Kurkela and Johanna Iivanainen release their joint album under the moniker of ALTAMULLAN ROAD on September 18th, 2020. The band has already piqued the audience interest with their three singles “When It’s Time”, “Underwater”, and “Interstellar Friends” during 2020.
Altamullan Road might be their first joint album, but Kurkela and Iivanainen have performed together already before. Their friendship started already 10 years ago on a show where they both performed, and in 2018 they joined forces for the Iivanainen-Kurkela Gemini tour. It was an undertaking of 21 shows, and it proved a roaring success, selling out almost every venue. Their sisterly connection, passion for similar music and movies, and their curious, undaunted look on life formed a tight bond between the two, so the idea of a joint album made all sense on the world. And what an album it is.
Two musical minds, two curious souls, two angelic voices in perfect harmony, inseparable and effortless, join for a walk down a path to places where magic happens. Mystical, adventurous, uplifting. In short, Altamullan Road’s music is nothing short of enchanting.
Johanna Kurkela feels blessed and states: “I’m so very grateful to be able to finally release an album which for the first time contains entirely my own compositions and lyrics, and songs that we’ve co-written with Johanna Iivanainen. It certainly feels like some long-lost piece of the puzzle is now found and in its place”.
Adds Iivanainen: “I’m feeling so happy and tingly now that our astonishing recording process is completed, and the album release is nigh. Wiring music with Johanna Kurkela was every bit as magical as our singing together.”
Altamullan Road is the sound of love and letting go, the voice of larks, poets and scallywags. It is the silent wail of celestial angels tasting the darkness, the grief of waning memories and the faint flickering of candles in the dark.
